Cenote diving, caverns and caves,  Riviera Maya Mexico

The Yucatan peninsula’s natural history is unique in the world. Having spanned millions of years underwater as a coral reef, the Yucatan was later dried up as the ocean levels dropped.  Throughout this dry period the limestone was carved out and dissolved into an elaborate system of underground caves and tunnels, covered in majestic stalactite and stalagmite rock formations.  Once past the ice age, the Cenotes naturally filled  with fresh water and developed into the “sacred wells” of the Maya civilization, providing the main source of drinking water and considered to have spiritual and healing properties.

Cavern diving is a wonderful and unforgettable experience. Though you don’t need specialized training to enjoy the ride, it’s very important that you have a qualified guide and that you follow and abide by the rules. It’s an enclosed environment and you need to have the right attitude, supervision and orientation. In the last 20 years many divers have opted to stay in Riviera Maya to spend their dive vacations.

Cavern diving requires excellent buoyancy. There are cenotes that require more skills and technique than others.

In this page you can find all the informations regarding the cenote diving, cavern and caves, in the Riviera Maya Mexico with Scuba Planet Mexico.
